Back in early 2009 when I was a first-term councillor the regional district advised they were going to ban beach fires at Goosespit. I made a last minute request to hold off the decision so that I could gather public input.

I started a Facebook page called Save our Spit and had over 3000 members in a short time. Families young and old enjoyed beach fires and this prompted me into action. I planned a rally on February 14th 2009 and called it “For the love of the spit”…well, the rain stopped, the clouds parted and we had a 1000 strong attendance with a roaring fire, all in favour of keeping the beach fire program. It was a resounding success and the RD continued to allow the beach fires. This was one of my most memorable accomplishments of being a councillor and as an advocate for all those families.
